Review: She Draws: She Builds – Celebrating International Women’s Day
To celebrate International Women’s Day, RIBA and NAWIC (National Association of Women in Construction) presented a screening of She Draws: She Builds, revealing the experiences and insights of women working in architecture. There were also presentations from Architects for Change, Women in BIM, Women in Social Housing (WISH) and Women in Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE). Although the forum was informal it also proved to be inspiring and thought provoking, with topics including:
- Why gender diversity is good for productivity and profitability
- What organisations are doing with regards to current succession and career development plans
- Practical ways in which practices and organisations can integrate gender equality as a key part of their business strategy and improve gender diversity at senior levels
I personally enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere, although this encouraged discussions and networking which inevitably led to a little overrun. I took some cards and details and hopefully conversations will be carried on in the not too distant future.
BIM was also a huge talking point, with a number architectural firms noting that clients were requesting BIM on projects but providing no guidance on how or what to deliver. Moving forwards, I will be looking to engage with consultants and help align their processes with the needs of a main contractor.
